Baltimore is the largest and most popular city in the state of Maryland. It is nicknamed, “Charm City” because of its charming nature. It is port city on the eastern coast of the United that was established by the colonial government in 1729. Today, it is a very popular tourist location that attracts visitors from all corners of the globe each year.
Baltimore is a city that is very rich in history. Throughout the years, some of the greatest events in US history have occurred in Baltimore. Therefore, museums and other monuments are very popular tourist’s attractions around the city. In Baltimore, guests can see a lot of relics and pieces of the cities history along with any new and modern attractions. It is a place where the old meets the new making it a very unique and exciting place to visit and live.
On February 7, 1904, most of the city was burned down by a massive fire. This is better known as the Great Baltimore Fire of 1904. The fire attacked more than 1,500 buildings within a 30 hour time period. Billions of dollars of damage was done to the city and the government declared the entire city was burned to the ground. It took a couple years to rebuild this city, but it came back stronger and better than ever. The government would not accept assistance. He claimed that the city of Baltimore would take care of its own; and that is exactly what it did. In 1906, Baltimore had risen from the ashes to become the wonderful city that it still today. This is marked as one of the greatest disasters in US history that had the most remarkable outcome.
The Inner Harbor is one of Baltimore most popular landmarks. During the early part of the 20th century, it was a port where boats docked to load and unload cargo such as sugar, bananas, and cocoa from all over the world. By the 1970s, it was just an area of abandoned, rat infested warehouses sitting amongst many rotting and broken down piers. During the 1990s, renovations began on the Inner Harbor and today it is the cities central tourist attraction. There are several museums, restaurants, hotels, and shopping venues located within the Inner Harbor. It is a place where visitors can see relics of the harbors past, combined with new, modern day attractions.
Today, Baltimore is home to several sporting events such as the Orioles baseball, the Ravens football, the Bullets basketball, and the Blades soccer. Sports are a very popular pastime for visitors and local alike in Baltimore.
When driving around Baltimore, Maryland it is important to remember that there is a lot Washington DC bound traffic. Baltimore is a popular stop for tourist going to or from Washington DC. Therefore, traffic can become congested during peak rush hours. Otherwise, Baltimore is a beautiful city to see from its many roadways. Car hire is a very affordable option in Baltimore. Since the city is close to Washington DC, there are many car hire agencies that have specials on rentals all the time. Many people will rent cars in Baltimore to drive to and from Washington DC. Renting a car is also a great way to tour the great city of Baltimore.
