Alicante is a beautiful Valencian city located in the southeastern part of Spain. It is the capital city of the province of Alicante; and is one of the fastest growing cities in Spain. The area that is Alicante has be inhabited for at least 7000 years. It is believed that hunters migrated south from Europe as early as 5000 BC and settled in this vast area in search for plants and animals. Later, it was inhabited by the Greeks who were interested in trade as they brought their alphabet and pottery to their new settlements. By 6 BC the Roman invasion in Spain had begun and they soon conquered the Greeks and took over the area. The Roman domination lasted in this area for more than 700 years and brought many of the traditions and customs, some of which are still being used today. In the 5th century, the Roman empire began to decline as the Visigoths and Arabics began their invasions. Eventually, the Moors took over this region and named it “Alicante” which means “city of lights” in Arabic language. Finally in 1246, the city was conquered once again and ruled by the Castilian King, Alfonso X. Later, during Franco’s rule in the 1950s, Alicante suffered a lot, as did the rest of Spain. However, despite the suffering, it slowly began to build itself as a tourist city. Many hotels and restaurants were built along the shoreline. Today, it is considered to be one of the most beautiful cities in the southern part of Spain. It is a place where people from all over the world come to visit each year. It is a city rich is history, culture, and tradition.
